Marijuana vs Cbd

If you’re just beginning to learn about cannabis, it can help to start with the basics. Let’s break down the different types of cannabis plants, including marijuana and hemp. Marijuana refers to cannabis plants with higher levels of THC. Hemp, on the other hand, is a cannabis plant with low levels of THC, and rich in CBD (cannabidiol).

Marijuana

Creates a euphoric “high” feeling.
Higher in THC, the psychoactive powerhouse in cannabis, and used for a wide range of medicinal and recreational purposes

Hemp

Does not cause “high” sensation.
This plant is used for more than 25k purposes and is the main source for CBD, which is known to provide a range of health and wellness benefits

Anatomy of Cannabis

The cannabis plant comes in 3 distinct genders: female, male, and hermaphrodite. The male cannabis plant produces the pollen needed to fertilize the female’s reproductive organs to produce seed. Hermaphrodite plants are self-fertilizing.

Male plants are generally low in THC. But female plants? They produce the beautiful flower buds that house the cannabinoids and terpenes we love to consume.

How CBD and THC Work in the Body

The human body is astounding. One of our fascinating features is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It helps control things like our mood, appetite, and how we feel pain. Phytocannabinoids found in cannabis, like THC and CBD, work naturally with this system because they act in a similar way to the endocannabinoids in our bodies.

With a system like this, it’s no wonder why cannabis has been cultivated to provide mental and physical relief for thousands of years across a range of conditions.

Delta-8 THC

This type of THC is similar to Delta-9 THC but with some differences. Delta-8 is naturally produced in small amounts. It produces milder psychoactive effects that do not last as long as Delta-9. Delta-8 from hemp plants can be found in products that are often highly synthesized. While these products are legal to purchase, you should know they are not regulated or held to safety standards.

Delta-9 THC

When you hear people talk about THC, they are usually referring to Delta-9. This is the most well-known type of THC. Of the three types of THC, Delta-9 is the most potent, and is found in high levels in the marijuana plant.

Delta-10 THC

The least potent of the three types, Delta-10 THC is similar to both Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC and produces mild psychoactive effects that some find uplifting and energizing. Delta-10 is the least potent of the three options. Because Delta-10 is a more recent discovery, less is known about this type.

While Delta-9 is illegal at a federal level (for now), both Delta-8 and Delta-10 are legal because they are primarily derived from hemp. Laws vary state-to-state, though, and Delta-10 is illegal in some states.
