All marijuana strains fall into three categories: Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid. Each offers a unique effect and experience. As cannabis experts continue to cultivate new breeds, new strains continue to arise.

Indica

A smaller, bushier, plant with wider leaves and fatter, denser buds rich in resin production. Indica Plants originate from the more mountainous regions of the Middle East. The plants are known to have a shorter flowering cycle and tend to stay much smaller than the Sativa plant. Examples of landrace Indica strains are Hindu Kush, Mazar, and Afghani.

Indica strains are known for their relaxing and soothing properties. They typically have higher levels of CBD and lower levels of  THC, the psychoactive compound.

Indica strains often provide a calming effect, which is why many people use them in the evening or before bed.

  • Stress relief
  • Anti-anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Pain relief

Sativa

A taller, stringier plant with thin, narrow leaves, and more airy flowers. Sativa plants originate from more southern, warmer climates and have a much longer flowering time to reach maturity. Examples of landrace sativa strains are Durban Poison, Acapulco Gold, Thai Stick, and Lambs Bread.

Sativa strains typically offer uplifting and energizing effects. They usually have higher  THC levels and lower CBD content.

Sativa strains are known to provide a cerebral (heady) high and are often chosen for daytime use.

  • Creative flow
  • Boost focus & energy
  • Socialization
  • Combat mood disorders

Hybrid

Plants that combine characteristics of Indica and Sativa

The OG cannabis types are Indica and Sativa plants, but did you know that most of the strains we grow (and love) today are hybrids? Hybrid strains are a blend of Indica and Sativa genetics. They offer a balanced experience that can vary depending on the specific strain.

While you’ll still hear strains described by dominance, many cannabis cultivators have shifted focus to deliver specific effects.

For instance, Elevate Cannabis breeds hybrid strains to bring out the best qualities each plant has to offer. Instead of one dominance or the other, plants are intentionally crossbred to deliver distinct experiences based on the results you want to achieve. Like pain relief without feeling sedated. Or a fun, social high without staying up all night—it’s all about finding that balance.
