Illinois lawmakers have approved sweeping changes to the state’s cannabis laws, making it easier and more convenient for adults and medical patients to purchase cannabis throughout the state.

The legislation includes expanded access for medical patients, higher possession limits, extended dispensary operating hours, and authorization for drive-through and pickup services at licensed dispensaries.

Among the most significant changes:

  • Drive-through and pickup services are authorized at licensed dispensaries, improving access for seniors, parents, people with disabilities, and anyone seeking a more convenient shopping experience.
  • Dispensary operating hours may extend until 2 a.m., giving retailers more flexibility and customers more opportunities to shop.
  • Medical cannabis patients will have access to more dispensaries statewide, eliminating the need to shop at a single designated location. Adult-use dispensaries will also be able to apply for medical licenses, expanding options for patients.
  • Effective immediately, possession limits will double, increasing from 30g of flower to 60g, from 500mg of infused products to 1,000mg, and from 5g of concentrates to 10g.

These updates represent some of the most significant changes to Illinois cannabis regulations since adult-use legalization launched in 2020. Supporters say the reforms modernize the program, improve patient access and bring cannabis retail more in line with how other regulated industries operate.

Implementation timelines will vary as state agencies finalize guidance and licensing requirements. Consumers should continue to follow current Illinois cannabis laws until the new updates take effect.
